The tension between Haiti and the Dominican Republic has deep historical roots and current complications. Haiti was the first black republic to gain its independence in 1804 from French colonial rule, and in contrast, the Dominican Republic gained its independence from Spanish colonization in 1844. Their differing pasts with colonialism and conflict laid the groundwork for the difference in identities between the countries.
Also, the divide between Haiti and the Dominican Republic has gotten deeper due to issues involving identity, citizenship, and immigration. The Dominican Republic has created stricter immigration laws that target Haitians and have led to the people accusing the DR government of being discriminatory and violating human rights. Along with these policies, things that also contribute to the strain in the countries' relations such as cultural prejudices and socioeconomic disparities. Hopefully, in the future, the two countries can come together to be harmonious and work together rather than having hatred for one another.
